Assessment

Students’ know-how, professional knowledge, and skills are assessed using a grading system
- in numbers from 1 to 5 (5 Excellent, 4 or 3 Good, 2 or 1 Satisfactory, 0 Fail)
- using ‘Pass – Fail’
- the mark ‘E’ means that the student did not attend the exam
- If the student did not participate in a course, no grades will be recorded in the transcript of records.

Courses transferred from elsewhere will be marked with a K (English-taught programmes) or with an M (Finnish-taught programmes).

The lecturers will explain the principles of grading at the beginning of each course.

Transcript of Records

The grades awarded will be shown on ASIO within one month after the exam date or the deadline set for an assignment.

Exam Papers

While exam papers and other assessed tasks are not generally returned to students, lecturers do archive them for six (6) months. Virtually completed studies are stored for one month.

Improving Passed Grades

Students can attempt to improve an approved grade once when the same course is offered again. This must be agreed with the teacher in question in advance. Those who are going to try to improve a  grade must register in writing using an exam envelope no later than two weeks before the retake date.

Requests for Rectification

Students have the right to review their written or otherwise recorded academic performance within one month / six months of the grade announcement date (the length of the period depends on how long the work in question is filed). Also, students have the right to know the grading criteria. Where necessary, a student can arrange an appointment time for a feedback discussion with the lecturer.

If students are dissatisfied with how the course was graded or other credit issues,
• they can appeal to have a re-assessment by the lecturer in question within 14 days from the date of notifying the lecturer of the matter.
• If students are dissatisfied with the decision of the lecturer, they can appeal to the Board of Examiners of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences within 14 days of the date of notifying the lecturer of the matter. The appeal should be submitted to the Head of School.
